The collection

The Kjerringøy collection of over 8000 objects is mainly interior and movable goods located at the trading post when Nordlandmuseet bought the place in 1959.

The collection includes everything from melkeringer and kjerner from stabburet, the storage house, old product range from Kramboden, Nordland-boats in the boathouse, to interior, furniture and personal assets from the main building.

The collection at the trading post is characterized by the fact that it includes small and large items that belonged in both household, daily life, trade, farm and fishing. There are special and valuable items, but also many completely everyday, simple objects. Since the collection is not aggregated bit by bit, but constitutes a household, there are large variations in object types.

Of particular interest it can be mentioned that Kjerringøy trading post has a large collection of Ryer. In total, we have a total of 8 whole and 7 half Ryer in the collection. Ryene were bedspreads, and common to use in both homes and in Lofoten. In particular, they were well-suited to bring on a boat, since they tolerated getting wet much better than sheepskin does. Ryene were warm, good bedspread. They were expensive, one Rye requires a lot of wool, and a Rye of dense floss can weigh 8-10 kg. Astrid Bugge has documented alot about the Ryene of Kjerringøy. The same has Ellen Kjellmo in the book Båtrya .

The maritime collection is much less extensive than you could expect from a place that has lived by marine resources and freight. Boats and gear had a utility value and did not stay in the estate as the operations went down in the 1900s. But, for example, what was left behind is a lot of exciting rigging parts and other rare marine equipment.

Other sections of the collection that deserve to be mentioned in particular are the family portraits of Anna Elisabeth Ellingsen, Christen Sverdrup and K.Zahl . Anna Elisabeth's great English stoneware which could seat over 70 people is also worth mentioning. The china from the 1840s was purchased for the occasion of the wedding between Anna Elisabeth and K.Zahl , and is the starting point for the decor of a popular mug sold at the trading post.
